Why Google Website Speed Checker Flags Button Text as an SEO Issue

I'm slinking into your inbox to tell you about Google's latest war that's so ridiculous, it belongs on reality TV.

RHONY reaction to why Google is flagging the text on buttons

Over the past couple of months, we've seen a rise in websites getting pinged over phrases like “Learn More” and “Read More” by Google Website Speed Checker (also known as PageSpeed Insights).

Seems silly, since it's a standard phrase we see on buttons (called ‘microcopy'). You probably even have a few “Read More” buttons if your website has a blog.

But the proof is in the call-out!

Google website speed checker flags Learn More text on buttons

The issue is that Google, and other search engines, want your users to know what they're clicking. Phrases like…

❌ Learn More

…don't exactly hint at what page your button leads to.

They've had beef with non-descriptive microcopy, like “Learn More” buttons, for years. However, it's only recently that they've started calling people out on this.

And when the Google gods start calling something out – you listen. Suggestions often happen before they decide to roll out an update that screws up your page ranking. This is likely part of a larger effort for people to have better content.

We're all about user experience and high-value content over here too. So, for now it's time to consider “Learn More” buttons as a website faux pas. Basic. Boring. In the past.

And none of those describe you, [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]. I recommend using this as an opportunity to scan your website and replace any faux pas phrases with something more fun for your website visitors.

Here are a few fun alternatives we've used for clients recently that have passed Google's standards

  • Where Do I Sign?
  • Let's Do It!
  • Say Less!
  • View The Vault
  • Keep Talkin'

And in case your brand is a little more formal than that, try…

  • Book Your Consult
  • Find Your Solution
  • View Portfolio
  • Read The Blog
  • See Our Services
  • Let's Chat

Again, let me stress that I don't think this war will affect your SEO, yet – if ever. But if even Google is tired of being told to “Read More” then you know it's a problem. And if it's a problem for Google, it's your problem too.

So tell me, are you opening your site yet to check your button copy?
